Example Itinerary for a Student’s Tour of the Western Front
Embark on a captivating journey through history with our WWI Battlefield Tour, designed exclusively to give students an unbeatable first-hand experience of the Great War.
Day 1
Wimereux and Etaples
- The first stop will be the Wimereux Communal Cemetery where John McCrae, the Canadian doctor/war poet, who wrote, “In Flanders Fields the poppies blow”, is buried.
- St Etienne Au Mont CWGC
- The next stop is the Etaples CWG cemetery, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the largest in France.
- During WW1 it was the site of many hospitals and the notorious, “Bull Ring” where young soldiers continued with their training before being sent to the front line.
- The last stop will be Montreuil sur Mer the beautiful walled town, where Haig was based during the Battle if the Somme in 1916.
- We will then travel to our accommodation for an evening meal.
Day 2
Wavans. Doullens, Beaumont Hamel & Thiepval

- CWG Louvencourt Cemetery
- The Sunken Road
- The Auchonvillers Tea Rooms (Trench and underground rooms)
- Beaumont Hamel, Newfoundland battlefield
- The Thiepval Memorial and Visitors centre
- The Lochnagar Crater at la Boiselle
- Evening Meal
Day 3
Loos, Fromelles, Passchendaele, Ypres & Hill 60
- The Battle of Loos 1915
- Fromelles 1916
- Pheasant Wood Cemetery and museum
- Picnic lunch
- Cobber Memorial
- VC Corner cemetery
- Ploegsteert Wood for refreshments
- Messines Ridge and craters 7 June 1917
- Hill 60 – 1st Australian Tunnelling Company
- Passchendaele and Tyne Cott Cemetery – the largest CWGC in the world
- Supper in Ypres
- Attendance at the daily memorial service and last post at The Menin Gate
- Return to Farmhouse.
- Evening meal
Day 4
Neuville St Vaast, Vimy Ridge & Notre Dame de Lorette
- Neuville St Vaast, German Cemetery
- Vimy Ridge, Canadian Memorial, Tunnels, trenches and visitors’ centre
- Wall of Remembrance at Notre Dame de Lorette
- Return to the UK
